All right and Alright

In formal writing all right is the correct spelling, and alright is the incorrect spelling.

All right, an adjective, means fairly good.

The quality of his writing is all right, but it is not outstanding.

However, it is preferable to use satisfactory instead.

The quality of his writing is satisfactory, but it is not outstanding.

Even though alright has gained some use in informal writing, it is to be avoided in formal writing.
