It's and Its

It's is a contraction for it is. Therefore, you use it's only when you can substitute it is in the sentence and the sentence still makes sense

It's about time that you replaced your winter tires with summer tires.

In this sentence you can substitute "It is about time that you replaced your winter tires with summer tires" and the sentence makes sense.

Its is a possessive pronoun showing ownership.

The beaver chewed its paw when it got caught in a trap.

In this sentence you cannot substitute "The beaver chewed it is paw when it got caught in a trap" because it does not make sense.
